Canadian vocalist Eunice Keitan infuses soft jazz with ancestral Malaysian folk music. She and her band make use of layers of music loops and unusual instruments such as the guzheng, or Chinese zither, a plucked instrument with a large soundboard and a series of movable bridges over its 21 strings. Band member Lina Cao is a guzheng virtuoso and a faculty member at Wilfrid Laurier University. She helps interpret Eunice’s songs, which are emotionally candid about identity and belonging.
