Jazz Festival 10th. Anniversary Gala – Featuring Jazz pianist great, Oliver Jones

Saturday, August 11th, 2007   7:00 – 9:00 pm.
Frederick H. Varley Art Gallery

The 2007 Jazz Festival 10th. Anniversary Gala promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s Markham Jazz Festival, combining great music and great wine and hor’s d’oeuvres, with the fun of winning great prizes.

The Gala will take place in the heady atmosphere of the Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery on Saturday, August 11th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. (www.varleygallery.ca)

The evening will feature an up-close-and-personal performance by Oliver Jones, who is coming to Markham from Montreal specifically for this exclusive event.   Jazz lovers will be able not only to see and hear Oliver perform, but will also be able to meet the artist before and after the performance.

Pianist Oliver Jones is renowned as one of Canada’s finest jazz musicians.  He was performing publicly at age five, and by the time he had his first nightclub appearance, he was nine.

Oliver Jones’ six-decade musical career has been rich and varied.  His classical music education was followed by stints at Montreal’s Café St.-Michel, enthralling patrons with his acrobatic piano stunts. And that was the start of remarkable career.

November 2005 saw Oliver being honoured in Ottawa by Canada’s new Governor General Michaelle Jean, as a recipient of the Governor General’s Performing Arts awards for lifetime artistic achievement

It is only fitting that Oliver Jones is our gala performer for 2007.  Oliver  was the feature performer at the very first Markham Jazz Festival, and it is with great pride that the Markham Jazz Festival welcomes back Oliver Jones to this, our 10th. Anniversary Celebration.
